Searching

The search pane is not visible by default so you may need to click the search tab in order to display it. You will see the following screen:

  1. Specify a genre, key, publisher, city of publication, country of publication, source location and/or year of publication range as the search criterion/criteria in accordance with your requirements. Each of these is presented as a drop-down list from which you select what you need.
  2. Type the name of a dedicatee or a plate number if you wish to add either of these as search criteria.
  3. As you type, the database will suggest names matching the letters you have entered in a panel that drops down from the input box. Note that the text you enter may produce a match which does not begin with the letter(s) in question; by way of example, in [B] above the 'g' entered in the box produces the name of Monsieur Auguste Leo. (See Source descriptions regarding CFEO's policies on the non-standardisation of dedicatees' names and on the approximate transcription of typography in plate numbers.)
  4. The dedicatee and plate number input field(s) will often produce numerous matches, as shown in [B] above; therefore the results are paginated, and you will need to use the arrow icons to move to the next or previous page of results.
  5. To select the name of a dedicatee or a given plate number as the search criterion, simply click it in the list of matches.
  6. To close the selection panel showing the matches without making a selection, click the 'X' icon.
  7. To begin searching against your selected criteria, click the 'Begin search' button.
  8. Or, to reset the form and clear any selections, click the 'Reset' button.
  9. You can close the search pane at any time by using the search tab. When you do so the settings you have made on the form will be retained for the next time you access the search facility.

Note that you may combine as many search criteria as you like, in whatever order or combinations you wish.

Search results

Search results are displayed in the browse pane, to the right of the search pane. Note that these results will appear in place of the tree display if you are using it. The results are displayed in a similar manner to the tree display in the browse pane. The only real difference is that each edition of a work is listed individually in the tree, rather than being shown according to the 'tabbed' arrangement of source icons that you see when browsing:

  • The 'Return to Browsing' button will clear the search results and return you to the browse pane so that you can continue browsing through all of the available works, rather than only those which met your chosen search criteria.
  • The works matching your search criteria are listed in a simplified version of the tree. You can see in the image above that each edition is listed separately (Berceuse Op. 57 French First Edition, Berceuse Op. 57 German First Edition, etc.). The tree works in the same way as the browse pane: expand entries you are interested in by using the 'plus' icons.
  • You can close the 'Search results' pane to make more room for the display pane if you open an image, a publication history or a source information link.
  • Individual pages within the matching works are listed exactly as per the tree display in the browse pane. Clicking the individual items will load the corresponding image at full size in the display pane; you may also view and compare images of specific pages using the comparison icons in the normal way.
